Sex assault charges dropped against Davidson College baseball player

August 25, 2017

All charges against a former Davidson College baseball player have been dropped, the student's attorney told Channel 9 Friday.

On Jan. 15, Davidson police said a 20-year-old female student reported being sexually assaulted by someone she knew, 20-year-old George "Ward" Coleman.

Coleman was arrested and charged with sexual battery on campus.

Those charges have since been dropped due to lack of evidence, court documents said.

"My client did not assault the accuser in any way," Coleman's attorney, Chris Fialko, said in a statement.

"Normally I don’t comment much in the press, but I feel I need to speak up about one thing. Those were strange days earlier this year when college students marched, and a college president opined, against the American principle of the presumption of innocence. I am glad wiser heads prevailed."

According to Davidson’s annual security report, between 2013 and 2015, there were 42 reports of rape on campus.
