ECU's Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter temporarily suspended

February 1, 2015

Sigma Phi Epsilon says all fraternity programming has been postponed pending the results of a sexual assault investigation.

Greenville police say a sexual assault that happened early Sunday, January 25 occurred at the Sigma Phi Epsilon house on East 5th Street.

In a statement to WITN, Communications Manager Rob Jepson says the fraternity has partnered with campus administrators at East Carolina University to investigate the sexual assault allegation.

"We have been in constant communication with the university since learning about this unfortunate allegation," said CEO Brian Warren on Friday. "Our educational efforts are based on the value of respect for self and others. We expect our chapters and members to act in accordance with these values. Until we know more, we are taking the allegation seriously and have asked the ECU chapter to temporarily suspend operations and assist in our investigation."

Jepson says Sigma Phi Epsilon is the nation's largest college fraternity with more than 15,000 undergraduates on 230 campuses across the country.

The fraternity currently maintains a 3.15 national GPA.
